Bright Spot | Vicat

As the first European industrial-scale flash calciner to enter operation Vicat’s Argilor facility is pioneering the shift to lower-carbon cement that helps meet France’s RE2020 building regulations. The company noticed supportive market signals, with customers requesting lower carbon alternatives in early 2022. Nowadays, every single tender they receive includes a decarbonisation approach.

Its industrial-scale flash calciner is an industrial furnace that rapidly heats, dehydrates (or ‘calcines’) and cools clay in a matter of seconds to create a pure and highly reactive activated clay. Activated clay is a highly promising Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) as it is widely available and provides good concrete performance.

The most efficient solution is partial clinker substitution using widely available, reactive, high-performing materials to produce cement as good as – or better than – traditional formulations. Our cement has just over 50% clinker, as slow evolution of EN standards currently prevents going below 50%, despite being technically viable.

Mission Possible Partnership | MPP

Mission Possible Partnership (MPP) is an independent non-profit organisation advancing global clean industry transformation. Since 2019, we have been working with some of the most energy-intensive industries: aluminium, aviation, cement, chemicals, shipping and steel, to cut their nearly 25% of global GHG emissions.

We mobilise business, finance, government and civil society leaders to speed up the shift to clean materials, chemicals and fuels. Having charted sectoral pathways to net-zero, we continue to forge new territory, lifting the barriers to enable a critical mass of clean industrial projects to break ground by 2030.

Mission Possible Partnership has people and partners on the ground in North America, Brazil, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, India and Asia Pacific.

Industrial Transition Accelerator | ITA

The ITA is a global multi-stakeholder platform -managed by Mission Possible Partnership – to fast-track decarbonisation across heavy-emitting industry and transport sectors.  It aims to significantly grow the pipeline of commercial-scale, clean industrial projects to reduce emissions by 2030.

Build Clean Now | BCN

Build Clean Now is a global campaign bringing together governments, companies and finance to accelerate the pace at which clean industrial projects are financed and built, year-on-year. It is led by the Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) and Mission Possible Partnership (MPP).

Texas has an opportunity to lead the new era of green industrial development

Energy & Industry Day at COP28 sees the launch of a new wave of breakthrough country and industry partnerships to grow global markets for low-carbon industrial products in high emitting sectors, such as steel, cement and heavy transport, accounting for around a third of global emissions.

In this month’s edition of Signal we dive into why clean industry is fundamental for resilience, look at the momentum that is building across Asia-Pacific, and present a green steel Bright Spot.
