Hydro Alunorte, the world’s largest alumina refinery outside China, is leading the way in pragmatic industrial decarbonisation. Located in Brazil, the site is implementing a multi-phase strategy to reduce emissions while maintaining and even improving competitiveness. Its roadmap includes:
The site has already cut 700,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually through fuel switching and secured long-term renewable PPAs covering 60% of its power demand. Hydro Alunorte is demonstrating how incremental, cost-effective steps can deliver deep emissions cuts today while preparing for full transformation by 2040.
We are not in a low-cost producing region due to the price of energy and workforce. So, we need to build more on one of the strategic advantages we do have, which is sustainability.

Build Clean Now | BCN
Build Clean Now is a global campaign bringing together governments, companies and finance to accelerate the pace at which clean industrial projects are financed and built, year-on-year. It is led by the Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) and Mission Possible Partnership (MPP).
