Velocys Altalto | United Kingdom

Every Bright Spot is an opportunity to inspire the next wave of progress.

From First-of-a-Kind to future-proof, Velocys’ Altalto is converting municipal waste into 23 ktpa of SAF in the UK, using a modular design for global growth.

Bright Spot | Velocys’ Altalto

Velocys has been at the forefront of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) development for over two decades. Its UK-based Altalto project is designed to deliver second-generation SAF, which is projected to dominate supply by 2050. With regulations and decarbonisation strategies driving strong market growth, first-generation SAF cannot meet demand alone due to finite feedstock supply. One way to produce second-generation SAF is through the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process, which can utilise a much broader range of non-food feedstock waste materials. Besides directing this feedstock to a higher-value application, SAF production also brings greater long-term economic and climate benefits.

Drawing on lessons from its initial basis of design, the company has shifted to a modular approach that reduces costs, minimises integration risks and strengthens the business case. Design optimisation and continuous development resulted in a significant reduction in capex costs at the small-scale demo stage. The Altalto project is linking proven FT technology to abundant waste feedstocks and reducing risk to demonstrate that SAF can be both bankable and socially beneficial.

We want to prove the technology early and get the integration to work, removing firstof-a-kind project risk perception. We’re building C and tech provider relationships, and can work alongside regulation.

Mission Possible Partnership | MPP

Mission Possible Partnership (MPP) is an independent non-profit organisation advancing global clean industry transformation. Since 2019, we have been working with some of the most energy-intensive industries: aluminium, aviation, cement, chemicals, shipping and steel, to cut their nearly 25% of global GHG emissions.

We mobilise business, finance, government and civil society leaders to speed up the shift to clean materials, chemicals and fuels. Having charted sectoral pathways to net-zero, we continue to forge new territory, lifting the barriers to enable a critical mass of clean industrial projects to break ground by 2030.

Industrial Transition Accelerator | ITA

The ITA is a global multi-stakeholder platform -managed by Mission Possible Partnership – to fast-track decarbonisation across heavy-emitting industry and transport sectors.  It aims to significantly grow the pipeline of commercial-scale, clean industrial projects to reduce emissions by 2030.

Build Clean Now | BCN

Build Clean Now is a global campaign bringing together governments, companies and finance to accelerate the pace at which clean industrial projects are financed and built, year-on-year. It is led by the Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) and Mission Possible Partnership (MPP).
